If anyone is thinking about visiting Disney World in the next couple months, keep in mind crowds are lighter, but rain is plentiful. Our last two trips to Disney World have been in late August. In 2013, we enjoyed mostly hot sunny days, with periodic rain that didn't last long. This year, we visited the last week in August and experienced rain everyday. We were very aware of the forecast, but August typically works well for our family.
Tips We Used To Prepare For The Rain Days
Weather Channel Website:
I visited the Weather Channel site often leading up to our trip. We were able to see up to two weeks in advance that it was going to rain every single day of our Disney Vacation. Knowing that far in advance allowed us to properly prepare.
Weather Channel App:
Anyone who's spent anytime in Florida knows rain is expected, but thunder storms could be dangerous so we wanted to try to avoid as much rain as possible while still enjoying ourselves. The weather app on my phone was very vital to our trip planning, since each day there was a 30 percent chance of a thunder storm. The app gives you an hour by hour break down so you can see when the rain is coming to your area. I must say it was pretty spot on during our trip, which allowed us to plan to be inside during the rainy hours. We only had one instance were it rained for a long time and we really got drenched.
My Disney Experience App:
Having this app at my finger tips daily was a life saver! We registered our Disney passes and were able to get FastPass+ reservations, dinning reservations and GPS step-by-step directions to rides and attractions. This app really helped when we could see rain was coming soon and wanted to get to a inside ride as fast as possible.
Plenty of Rain Gear:
We packed $1 disposable rain ponchos, two per person, a couple mini travel umbrellas and water proof jackets. We packed this stuff in a bag and took it to the park with us each day. This worked well most days. We also wore sandals or tennis shoes that would dry easily.
Take a Break and Grab a Bite to Eat:
This may be obvious, but if you are able to make day-of reservations, check the hourly conditions for the day and try to book a sit-down meal during that time. I was able to book some great character meals at the last minute; which allowed the kids an opportunity to eat and be entertained by their Disney friends during the storms. If this isn't possible use your My Disney App and find a place to crowd in and have a snack. For the most part, this plan worked out great for us and allowed us to wait out the rain. Also, in my experience immediately following rain was a great time to ride, because a lot of people leave the park when it rains. But not us, so we walked right on many of our favorites with no wait after the rain.
